James Barry is a research scientist at Project Competence E (PCE) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). He has been involved in the procurement, development and commissioning of several energy storage projects, in particular a multi-kWh PV-battery system at the Helmholtz Institute Ulm. James holds a PhD in physics from the University of Heidelberg, and worked as a researcher in the field of neutrino physics at the Max-Planck-Institute for Nuclear Physics for four years. After his PhD James made the quantum leap from theoretical physics to renewable energy research at KIT, where he uses advanced data analysis methods to optimise the integration of energy storage solutions.

John Hodemaekers has an electro technical background and experience in Asset management. Today John is Innovation Manager in the Strategy and Innovation department of Stedin Netbeheer, a Dutch DSO, where he is responsible for a portfolio of smart grid projects. The focus of these projects is the transition to a more sustainable energy system. John also represents Stedin in several taskforces related to the transition. John is also chairman of the executive board of the USEF foundation. Stedin is one of the founding partners of this foundation. The foundation has developed the Universal Smart Energy Framework, a market control mechanism for a future sustainable energy system.
Ervin PLANINC System Operation Specialist And Project Manager ELES , Slovenia
Ervin Planinc gained his B.Sc. degree from the University of Ljubljana in 2007 and his M.Sc. degree in 2016 in electrical engineering, respectively. He is a System Operation Specialist and Project Manager in the System Operation Division at Slovenian Transmission System Operator ELES. In the past, he was working in the Network Development and Asset Management Division where he was responsible for System Adequacy, load and generation forecasts, network modelling and for coordination of the preparation of the Ten-Year Network Development Plan. He was a member of the ENTSO-E SDC sub-groups and a member of the subgroup on Generation Adequacy Assessment of the Electricity Coordination Group at European Commission DG Energy. Since 2013 he is working in the System Operation Division where he is focusing on Ancillary Services and Smart Grids. He is a Project Manager of the Battery Energy Storage System project, which is a part of the international Smart Grid project called SINCRO.GRID.

Eliano Russo has got more than 15 years’ experience in the utility area with a strong focus on renewables and business development. After having worked 8 years for ENEL, he joined E.ON in 2009 and has been working for almost four years in E.ON Climate & Renewables (EC&R), initially leading the Carbon Sourcing Unit and later on, in February 2012, taking the position of Director for Business Development and Business Affairs where he was in charge for Strategy, Portfolio Management, Policies and Internal Communication. In 2012 he moved to Brazil where he took the responsibility to develop renewable projects for E.ON in Latin America. Eliano came back to Europe in 2014 and since October 2014 he is responsible for developing Energy Storage Solutions in E.ON.

Mr Sengupta has over 21 years of experience in Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Energy Field with International exposure in Europe (UK & Ireland), Middle East (Oman & UAE), Asia (India & Malaysia) & Africa (Cameroon, Nigeria). He has worked in all possible applications of solar PV (MW scale utility, kW scale rooftop), solar power for telecom towers, solar power for oil & gas, solar off-grid (street/home lighting, village electrification etc.). He underwent training on ‘Manufacturing Technology of Crystalline Solar Photovoltaic Cells’ by Helios Technology SPA, Italy in 1994, and on ‘Grid Connected Solar PV System Design and Engineering’, by ENDECON Engineering, California, USA, in 2002. Mr Sengupta has also consulted for MW level utility scale project developers including interpretation of policies, site feasibility study, technology assessment, energy generation estimation, power evacuation assessment, preparation of bankable DPR, plant performance audit, complete design & engineering, O&M audit, etc.
Andreas Tirez received the degree of Master in Electrotechnical Engineering in 2000 and a Master in Economics in 2007, both from the University of Leuven (KULeuven), Belgium. In 2006, he joined the Belgian federal regulatory body for electricity and gas (CREG), within the department of the technical functioning of the electricity and gas market. His work focused on electricity interconnection capacity and monitoring of wholesale power trading. In 2013, he became the director of this department and joined the board of directors of CREG.

Nick Tumilowicz is Principal Technical Leader for Energy Storage and Distributed Generation with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), deploying distributed energy technologies into practical, real-world contexts. By identifying and executing demonstration projects across the international community, he addresses the utility challenges of high-penetration renewables and advises on technical solutions to validate value streams and inform industry standards. Prior to joining EPRI, Tumilowicz drove global research and development efforts as Director of Energy Storage with SunEdison and renewable energy hardware testing at the United States Department of Defense Naval Research Laboratory. Tumilowicz studied mechanical engineering at Marquette University, with a focus on energy systems and materials science, and is a member of the Solar Energy Society.

Lorraine H. Akiba was appointed to the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission in January 2012 by Governor Neil Abercrombie for a term to expire June 30, 2018. Andy leads Ofgem’s work on Flexibility and the teams dealing with the Electricity system framework and connections and constraint management. Andy is also a member of Ofgem’s Enforcement Oversight Board. He joined Ofgem in 2008 from the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR), where he was Head of Network Regulation, and interim Deputy Director of Industry Monitoring and Analysis. Michael Koller holds a B.Sc. in Chemistry and a M.Sc. in Energy Science and Technology (passed with distinction), both from ETH Zurich. He joined the Elektrizitaetzswerke des Kanton Zurich (EKZ, Utility of the Canton Zurich) in 2011 and is responsible for the development of business cases for distributed energy storage . His interests and activities at EKZ include advanced control strategies for grid integration of distributed generation and storage resources, battery technologies and the provision of ancillary services. Adriana is Low Carbon Technologies and External Engagement Manager at UK Power Networks. She oversees innovation projects on electrification of transport and heat, small scale generation and storage. She is currently in charge of Smarter Network Storage, a 6MW/10MWh grid-scale battery. She joined the company in 2012 as Low Carbon Project Manager of Flexible Plug and Play, a project addressing the challenge of connecting more renewable distributed generation, before moving onto to become the Commercial Strategy Lead for Low Carbon London, a four year innovation project that investigated the impact of a wide range of low carbon technologies on London’s electricity distribution network. Prior to joining UK Power Network Adriana worked at Acciona Energy in charge of developing 300 MW of wind energy in Mexico. She also worked in the Ministry of Energy in Mexico helping design the country’s first Renewable Energy Programme. Qualifications include a Master of Public Administration in Environmental Science and Policy degree from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, as well as a BSc Industrial Engineering from Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México.
Commissioner Jesus Serrano-Landeros was appointed by the Senate as a Commissioner for Mexico’s Energy Regulatory Commission on September 18th, 2014. Prior to his appointment as Commissioner, he worked as general director of generation, transmission and transformation of electric power in the Ministry of Energy. He also worked as resident and project engineer at Luz y Fuerza del Centro, from 1988 to 1992 and as an assistant director of financial institution supervision in the National Banking and Securities Commission from 2001 to 2002. He was the director of economic policy from 2002 to 2006, and deputy general director of public policy analysis from 2007 to 2010 in the Economic Planning Unit of the Ministry of Finance. Jesus was the general director of heavy and high technology industries in the Ministry of Economy from 2010 to 2013 and manager of analysis of Public Finance at the Bank of Mexico, from 2013 to March 2014.

Luigi Lanuzza, born in Milazzo (Messina - Italy), holds a Master Degree in Electronic Engineering from University of Messina and a Master in Photovoltaic Engineering magna cum laude from University of Rome - Tor Vergata. After having worked in the University of Pisa as associate researcher, developing research activities in applied Electromagnetics, he moved to the semiconductors manufacturing industry working for ASML. Then, in 2012, he was part of the startup of the activities in South Africa, managing the development of several projects. Robin McCormick has extensive experience in the power industry in a regulated utility environment. He was jointly responsible for establishing the Single Electricity Market Operator, an all-island wholesale electricity market in Ireland. Donald McPhail (BE, CPEng, RPEQ), is the Senior Network Strategy and Policy Engineer with Ergon Energy. Donald has been responsible for the development and implementation of Ergon Energy’s connection standards, strategies and policies for distributed energy resources - including Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage, Electric Vehicles and microgrids. The focus of this work has been to facilitate Ergon Energy’s vision to become a market enabler, in an increasingly dynamic industry. From 2011 to 2013 Donald was an E.S. Cornwall Scholar, working in the UK, Netherlands and US and gaining exposure to international developments in the integration of DER. Paulo works on EDP’s smart grids projects since 2007, where he currently is director of Technology and Innovation. During the last years he has led the solution development of the Inovgrid project, involving architecture definition, device specification, functionality and interoperability testing and qualification of the main components of the solution. Aparna Narang is the Director of Short-Term Electric Supply at Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E). She leads procurement of over $3Bn annually in the short-term electricity markets to meet demand. Her team is also responsible for 24 x 7 dispatch communications for over 20,000 MW, including renewable energy and energy storage. Prior to joining PG&E in 2010, Aparna worked in the wind energy industry developing projects and project managing construction in North America. Stefan Nykamp received his M.Sc. degree from the University of Muenster and the RWTH Aachen, Germany in 2010 in Energy Economics. He received his doctorate in 2013 from the University of Twente, The Netherlands (extra-occupational). He has worked in several roles in the grid planning and strategic projects of RWE. Currently, he is responsible for the department Innovationmanagement / Grid Storage of Westnetz GmbH, Dortmund (Germany).
Robert O'ROURKE Manager, Electricity Markets COMMISSION FOR ENERGY REGULATION - CER , Ireland
Robert has wide experience in electricity and gas regulation. He is currently the manager of Electricity Networks in the Commission for Energy Regulation in Ireland. Ireland has ambitious targets for the integration of renewable energy onto the system and is currently implementing a range of policies to facilitate this. His at the CER works closely with the Utility Regulator in Northern Ireland on network related issues in the all-island Single Electricity Market (SEM) and with other European regulators on issues such as the EU Network Codes.

Pablo Albi has been involved in standardization activities since 2005, when he joined AENOR (Spanish National Committee) as standardization technician for several electrotechnical committees. In 2009 he joined REE, supporting and coordinating the standardization activities of his company since then. He is chairman of the Spanish mirror committees of IEC TC 120:Electrical Energy Storage (EES) Systems, and IEC TC 38: Instrument transformers. He has participated in the definition and implementation of REE´s R&D projects for electrical storage systems. He is also the Spanish delegate at IEC TC 120, and member of its WG 2 Unit parameters and testing methods and WG 3 Planning and installation.”
Bjorn PETERS General Manager COMMODITY CONSULTING , Germany
Bjorn Peters joined DWS Investments, the retail asset management arm of Deutsche Bank and the largest mutual fund company in Germany, five years ago. He is responsible for setting up and marketing closed-end funds on energy and infrastructure projects. In 2012, a closed-end fund was launched that invests in European small hydropower. A few other projects are in the pipeline that are supposed to finance other, mostly renewable, power stations in Europe and beyond. Before joining DWS, Bjorn worked at McKinsey and at Deutsche Borse AG, where he became an expert in commodity markets. He is founder of Germany's most successful "gold fund", an exchange-traded commodity marketed under the brand "Xetra-Gold". Bjorn holds a PhD in physics. He is married and has two daughters.

Rosario Polito obtained an M.Sc in Electrical Engineering form the University of Naples Federico II in 2009. After gaining work experience in the field of renewables and electric systems designing as a project engineer, concurrently the first year of Ph.D. School in Power Converter, Electric Machine and Electric Drives, he joined Italian TSO Terna as an analyst in the Dispatching and Energy Operation Department, specializing on the Italian Energy Market and Ancillary Services Market. In 2013, he joined Terna Storage, another subsidiary of the Terna Group, whose mission focuses on the realization of the ESSs project approved by the Italian Regulator. He then became the project leader responsible for ESS technologies and system operation, having the responsibility of the Energy Intensive ESS design and commissioning, including factory and site tests and the activation.

In a 20-year career in the energy industry, Adrian has been active in the development and market introduction of novel low carbon technologies. He led the development of micro CHP systems in British Gas and BG Group, and supported their commercialisation in a number of international markets. He has extensive experience in evaluating and trialing a wide range of energy technologies for residential and commercial applications, including heat pumps, solar energy, cogeneration, HVAC equipment etc. He currently manages Centrica’s participation in a number of major international collaborative research and development programmes in gas utilisation technology. Adrian has a degree in Mechanical Engineering, MSc in Building Services Engineering and an MBA from Durham University Business School.
Veli-Pekka SAAJO Director ENERGY AUTHORITY , Finland
Veli-Pekka is the head of network regulation section and a member of the executive board to the Energy Authority in Finland. The Authority has responsibilities in electricity and natural gas networks and markets, as well as in, emission trading, energy efficiency and licensing renewable schemes. He has been working with several expert groups involved in smart energy solutions in addition to electricity networks. Working for two decades within energy sector, he has a broad experience in regulatory aspects of electricity and gas distribution and transmission network operators. He has specialized in economic regulation and incentive schemes with view of an economist. He is an active member of the Council of European Energy Regulators (CEER), especially with the Distribution System working group (DS WG). As a former co-chair of the Electricity Quality of Supply and Smart Grids Task Force (EQS TF), has given him a broad view on smart solutions in Europe. He is also active within academic research as being a former member of advisory board of the IDE4L project and as being on the advisory panel of the EL-TRAN project.
Raphael SCHOENTGEN Board Chairman, And CTO, HYDROGEN EUROPE, ENGIE , France
Raphael Schoentgen is, since April 2014, the Group’s Director for Research and Technologies (CTO). He has been elected President of Hydrogen Europe in June 2016. He is since 2015 a Board Member of the French Institute of Petroleum and New Energies. He was previously, from 2008 to 2014, President of the Group in China. Between 2004 and 2007, R. Schoentgen was diplomatic advisor to the French Minister in charge of Energy, Telecommunications and Industry. Previously, he also worked in the public sector as detached national expert to the European Commission’s Competition General Directorate and as Head of the State Economic Development Department of France’s Northern Region. In the private sector, Mr Schoentgen held jobs in the textile sector and water sector in France, in telecommunications in China, in the power sector in the United States and Thailand, and in the gas sector in Mexico. Raphael holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration (member of the "French Corps des Mines") and a Civil Engineering Degree of the Paris National Mining University ("Ecole Nationale des Mines de Paris"). Raphael has been nominated in 2011 amongst the Young Global Leaders of the World Economic Forum, in 2012 amongst the Young Leaders of the France China Foundation, and in 2014 amongst the Young Leaders of the World Cities Summit. He was until early 2014 a Member of the Advisory Board of the European Trade Chamber in China and President of its Energy Working Group.

Hannes Seidl studied physics at the Technical University of Munich and the University of Kapstadt. P.G. Therond is currently Head of Technologies at EDF Energies Nouvelles, a green energy provider. In this position, he looks to all development with renewable technologies like PV solar, Concentrated Solar Power, marine energies, offshore wind, electrical storage, innovative biomass. Previously, he was responsible for strategy for New Businesses at EDF SA. Pierre-Guy Therond spent also 15 years at the R&D division of EDF, where he took various positions, as researcher and manager of research, development and testing services in the domains of electrical engineering, electrical systems, materials, renewable energy and environment. His last R&D position was as Director for R&D portfolio on renewable and environment. Pierre-Guy Therond has been involved into international organizations: he chaired two Task Forces at CIGRE , and used to be the Vice President of RECS International for 4 years. Cedric Thoma is currently working as a green technologies policy advisor on smart grids, hydrogen and energy storage at the French Ministry of Energy. He makes policy recommandations to develop storage units in the French energy system, especially in the electricity mix, and participates in the evaluation process of energy projects funded via the national public innovation fund. He also worked for the main French DSO as a lobbyist for 5 years. Cedric Thoma graduated from the Mines Paristech "grande école" in 2010. 
Harold VELDKAMP Leading Delivery Manager For Strategy And Innovation, Senior Program Manager ALLIANDER , Netherlands
Harold Veldkamp studied Business Informatics in Groningen, The Netherlands. After working in the ICT industry covering a wide variety of business lines such as Finance, Government and Telecommunications, he became involved in the Energy sector and remained in that sector until today. He has been a member of the standardization committee of the Dutch smart meter requirements, member of the Smart Grids taskforce of the Dutch government and member of the evaluation committee of national energy related grant programs. He co-founded research centres such as RenQi and Entrance, both situated in Groningen. Right now he is employed by Alliander, serving as the delivery manager for all innovation projects related to Energy Transition for the Asset Management department. Sam Wilkinson is a Senior Research Manager for the Solar and Energy Storage Research group at IHS Markit. During eight years working within the group, Sam has been responsible for researching the PV inverter market and the PV module and polysilicon supply chain working closely with leading global suppliers to develop detailed analysis on these markets. Bharath Reddy YELLASIRI Senior Manager, SOLAR ENERGY CORPORATION OF INDIA - SECI, India Mr. Yellasiri has been the Senior Manager at the Solar Energy Corporation of India since July 2012. Prior to his current position, he was the General Manager of Engineering and Technology at Sujana Energy Limited for a year. His work there included: LED luminaire design and development, solar thermal design and development and solar PV system design and integration. His experience at Moserbaer Photovoltaic Ltd enabled him to research and develop crystalline silicon solar cells and nanostructured solar cells. He holds an MSc in Physics and a Ph.D in thinfilms and solar cells, from Sri Venkateswara University.
